Oxygen Family by Jordan Taff and Carlos Shultz

  • The Oxygen Family's elements are in Group 16 and in Period 2 in the Periodic Table.

  • The elements in our family are oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and polonium.

  • Our group is a gas.

  • Three physical properties in our group is that they are poor conductors of heat and electricity, they are nonmetals, and they are dull and brittle.

  • Three chemical properties in our group is that they are reactive, which means they readily form compounds, they gain or share electrons when they react with other atoms.

  • Sulfur is used in the manufacture for rubber bands and car tires. Most sulfur is used to make sulfuric acid, one of the most important chemicals used in industry. Also, oxygen can become a very dangerous element when it forms a triatomic molecule, which collects in a layer in the upper atmosphere where it screens out harmful radiation.

  • Two common uses for the Oxygen Family is breathing which is important for life and sulfur used for car tires required for cars to run properly.
